Engine wont start..

Post by Trip »

My mechanic is struggling to get to the bottom of this..

Van has had an intermittent starting problem for a couple of months - turn the key, one audible click from the starter and then..nothing

replacing the connection to the starter seemed to work for a bit
jiggling the conection sometimes worked
RAC man hit the starter with a hammer:-( worked once so I had starter replaced on monday (by the garage). A new unit not recon.

and then this morning - no start. The same thing. one audible click but no turn over
plenty of juice in the battery, all terminals nice and tight

Any ideas to try next?

Its a diesel van with replacement AAZ engine (Ringo's old van if tht means any thing to you !)

Ditto here I never got to the bottom of mine (same engine) but I dont think you mentioned the ignition switch being changed. Also the earth to the front end of the gearbox could do with renewing if its not been done. I have added another earth from the back of the starter to the battery earth. Mine will start if I hold the key in start position, seems to worse in damp/wet conditions.

My diesel had a tendency to not want to start after being left stood for awhile, I added an extra earth strap so it has two now and it starts on the button every time now.

If you have the 5 speed gearbox, Aidan our resident gearbox guy recommends re-siting the earth from the front of the Gbox as it increses the rot in a place where yuou dont want it. I haven't thought of a good 13mm bolt location to chassis yet hence the back of starter to battery but you cant use quite the same meaty earth strap there.

I added my new earth strap by attaching it between the bracket that the "exhaust mounting bracket" attaches to and one of the bolts that secures the engine bars on the rear cross-member

I'm tempted to go and jiggle a few wires myself this morning to see if I can track it down

found problem - loose (read: totally unconnected) lead to new starter motor.

Tempted to call the mechanic an "idiot", but then so am I for not checking it  Clearly the lead must have been on for me to drive it home but the connector is a loose fit and it had jumped off.

Difficult to get to to clamp it..... but even so, school boy error surely

This has happened to others before and people recommend that a tie strap is used to secure the wire as well as protecting the connector with a rubber boot because it is in a very exposed part of the engine bay.

Hi all been having a problem with my AAZ 1.9TD starting recently. When its cold it starts fine , glow plugs light and then engine fires up. If its hot then it will normally start but anything in between is a night mare, if I leave it for about an hour, it's as if the glow plugs don't know wether to light or not.....then I normally run the battery down trying to start!

Normally jump starts afterwards, any ideas?

Thanks Aidan, don't suppose you have a relay as my garage says they are obsolete now?
