The unusual accessory thread

I was well chuffed to pick up this little number at the Hockenheim Treffen recently:


Only 50 yoyos (well I couldn't make the frame in a day, never mind the netting)
I'm pretty sure it's a rear luggage guard, as the side strips have a wide fork to go over the rear bench pegs, the uprights are cranked to clear the bench top and the height is correct to just clear the headlining. Needs a small weld repair and a spot of straightening, then press it into service!

Funny thing is that it's slightly width adjustable (to allow for body shell tolerances or different trim?) but has no part number. Then again large assemblies or kits usually just have a sticker or label on the packaging, not the item itself. The tubular cross-bars remind me of the ones used for jailbars, so I reckon it's pukka VW.

Time to check ETKA...

It would seem not Lloyd. I checked ETKA too, the one catalogued has distinct top corner cut-outs to clear the slider channels and forward-facing tabs for mounting to the B-posts.
This one is designed with forked legs that bolt onto the spare pair of tapped holes direcly behind the rear bench pegs, with the "dog's leg" vertical bars hooking perfectly behind the rear bench.
I'm going to use it as a pattern for my rear luggage guard
