Relay 292 strangeness...NOW FIXED

Post by LeeME3 »

So, got myself a relay 292 to implement the headlight buzzer (I have a habit of driving on sidelights regardless of conditions so figured it would be a good thing). Plugged it in to the correct slot in the fuse / relay box. Reached across and turned the headlights on and was rewarded with an alarm sound. Closed cubby hole, felt smug, had cuppa. A few mins later dropped the kids off...jumped out and my neighbour pointed out my headlights were still on. In silence.

So, in summary the relay worked as advertised. Once. Is there an easy way to check if I've fried the relay (and if so why / how?) or if the van wiring is somehow at fault? (Everything else electrical works as I'd expect). Any advice on which terminals to multimeter or anything like that would be great - of course the relays are 'only' £10 or so from a well known auction site (or, no doubt, cheaper if I go to my local scrappy) but I'd still rather not blow several of them up in the process...

Thanks in advance!

(PS I don't think this is the case but does it require relay 99 - infinite variable wash wipe - to also be present? I have that one on order so will her able to test asap)

BTW the 99 Relay doesn't give 'infinate' intermittent wipe it's just between a much larger range ... as fitted to the higher up the food chain VW/Audi group cars.

Thanks y'all! I'll wait for the arrival of 99 then and see where we are. All I can assume is maybe it worked once because it was in the right condition but needs 99 to be present to 'reset' it. And if that doesn't make sense my excuse is Monday morning...

i have only had a couple work without a 99 but with the 19

its an earth thing as with the buzzer on you can change the tune by switching the wiper switch!

can take a few relays

I've got relay 99 on order - should be waiting for me when i get home from my finance course (oh lucky me!). Yep going to CamperJam so will take whatever relays I've got and compare it to what others have...I really am dreadful for leaving lights on! If I can't get it to work via the relays I'll fit an aftermarket buzzer but obviously the relay is the first and easiest port of call. Thanks
