Replacing windscreen, but also welding rust

Post by Negativegravity »

So, after some puzzlement over how it happened, I've discovered a small crack in the bottom right of my windscreen. I also have a chip in the centre cause by a stone flicking up behind a lorry over the weekend. Now then... I've been debating over whether to get the window replaced or repaired. However, I know for a fact that theres a least SOME rust under there, as A) I can see it from inside, B) Water leaks through with heavy rain.

So.... I've covered for window repairs with an excess of £90, but how do I go about having it replaced but also having any possible rust treated/welded? I cant just get the autoglass people to take it out and then wait whilst I go and find a welder to sort the rust, only to get them put the new windscreen in the following day can I?

Any thoughts? :?

Just noticed that we both live in the same part of the world :D I also have this job to tackle at some point (with the welding as well) so I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

The ebay link in your "wanted" thread looks interesting. I think Brickwerks and Schofields both sell repair sections for the windscreen surround. Yep, here it is on bw:

Hmmm, interesting.

I also have contacts for two welders now. One guy is coming round to mine tonight to have a look. Will be difficult as the window is still in place. But still...

I'll keep you posted! :ok

Ok Nicola&Tony, spoke to some very nice guys that a friend's dad recommended. There's 3 guys near the biscuit factory, one of whom fits car windows. For a start, it turns out that the window guy can replace my windscreen for less than my excess (£90) - he's going to call me tomorrow with real figures, and then the other two can do the welding once the screen is out. Will be much better this way as they all know and can work around and with each other.

They're pretty busy at the moment, so I'm going to get it done in 2 weeks (going to inverness before then and don't want to run the risk of it taking longer and stopping the trip). I can give you their number if you like. Unless you want to wait until I've had mine done and can judge quality

Sounds promising, we're in no hurry I've got plenty of other jobs to be getting on with  Did you ask what would happen if the dash needs to come out to do the welding, would they still do it?

Yeah, I'll print out step by step instructions. Showed them the wiki page about just shielding the dash with metal/wood and they seemed ok though :o

Sounds great, I hope they do a good job, I'd really like to keep the rain out of our footwells. How long have you had your van?
