Engine is a 2.0 cu.
I have previously given my engine a top end rebuild. Heads have been reconditioned (Guides, Some valves replaced, Some seats replaced).
Have rebuilt the engine with Victor Reinz gaskets. Painted the tinware Black and replaced the engine bay seal with a vw heritage one which makes it all very snug.
Tinware fits very tight..however i have some black silicone which I will run around the joints best I can. Its had new bosch plugs,Bosch cap and rotor arm and is running a 007 dizzy with vacuum advance only and is electronic.
Rocker covers are still black and have replaced Hydraulic lifters too. These are tightened to 1 and half turns when I installed them. Turned crank to tdc for each cylinder and adjusted them.
Oil in her originally when I first fired her up was Car lube 15/40 semi (Which I dont usually use). This has been changed to 20/50 Unipart mineral. Has a MANN filter installed (I drained the filter when I changed the oil).
Here is the other part which I know some people dont like..its had fitted on to her a 32/36 Progressive weber with manifold. The carb is supplied with a Webcon electric fuel pump and has a regulator installed. All fuel lines replaced with 8mm Gates etc fuel hose. It has a MANN fuel filter installed before the pump too. Fuel pressure is set to 4psi as per advice from 3 sources.
Van starts and runs lovely. Sounds really nice with no rattles and sounds strong.....However she appears to run hotter than before. I can no longer hold the dipstick after a run and the sump is very hot that I cannot keep my hand on it.
Im guessing its running lean and I noticed a very very slight pink !...yes I know pinking is not good on an Aircooled but have not driven the van since hearing this..I only drove about 10 miles so Im hoping no damage done. I have started her last night and it sounds nice.
With regard to the pinking im guessing the dizzy is set too advanced ? Although I did time it to 7.5 btdc..is this correct ?
The lean bit I know really needs to go on a rolling road to resolve it, however I have heard mixed results about rolling road tuning that buses etc have come back worse than they went in as some operatives dont know how to tune vw aircooleds correctly..so am a little reluctant to spend big bucks on this..although this would be my preferred option.
Im off to scotland in a months time so the van needs to do its thing and run well.
To be fair the van has never sounded so good. My solex carbs were really bad and leaking petrol so they had to go.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thankyou
Glenn.
