£700 spent so far and still no solution!!!

Post by Bertiedabus »

Hi Folks can anyone help,
I always take my van to a local Classic VW specialist and they are stumped too.
I have a loud knocking coming from the rear of the van when I accelerate, does not knock when turning, slowing etc.
I have had both drive shafts and CV joints replaced (inc back plates as they had rusted out), I have had all breaks replaced, the guys at the garge have checked all nuts are in place and tight, the speedo is in place etc. But this noise is still carrying on. Mumbles about gear box and such like but no concrete conclusions, I am worried something really bad is going to happen..anyone had the same problems?
I have read the other posts re:knocking noises but most seem to be engined based and mine isn't.
Kind Regards
Alex

Is it as you release the clutch ? Can you feel it through the gearlever at all ? Gearbox nose mount ?

I have had both drive shafts and CV joints replaced
all 4 i.e. inner and outer? also double check tightness of CV bolts after 50 miles. rear wheel bearing might be on its way out? (or the carrier it sits in) but a half decent mechanic would spot that.

It could be something as simple as engine mountings...who knows, it's just such a shame that garages use punters like you as a CASH COW! when I would be embarassed to charge anything UNTIL I had actually cured the problem.

I would examine the gearbox nose mount closely - maybe try a mate in the back with a hand on the floor pan above it to see if he can feel the knock there. Those mounts get a lot of punishment over 25+ years.

in the back tyres there was a lump of rubber and rust loose when i accelorated i could hear it but once it was spun up it dissapeard until i stopped and set off again
i know it sounds far fetched but this generally was the problem give it a go could be a quick fix :ok
