Cheap campsites

Hello everybody,

When we go camping we like to go basic; I mean a field more or less with a portaloo as an added bonus..my problem is that I begrudge spending £20 a night for posh showers and a well maintained lawn that we really don't need. Does anybody know of a good way to discover really cheap sites? We live in North Yorkshire.

If not, can anybody recommend a cheap, quiet site in the Alnwick area?
(We have two young children so I do not feel comfortable free camping)

If you're willing to buy a couple of beers or a meal most country pubs are happy to let you spend the night in the car park. Also plenty of wild camping spots around. Google wild camping forum. Lots of good info and locations on there.

Join the Camping Club and use one of their hundreds of CL sites. Max of 5 units at any one time, usually on a farm site or similar, and cheap as chips.

I agree totally - we have found that following your nose is best!

We rarely use motorways as in the van A roads are much nicer!!

Often we dont book.

We have a rule that any campsite with a brown tourist signpost is best best avoided - we look out for handmade signs and youd be amazed how many there are, generally they are less than a tenner a night and we have rarely been disappointed, although there have been some iffy moments!!

Thing is these sites will not be full as they dont often have web pages etc. and we have found some amazing sites for next to nothing that are not listed anywhere, real old school!

If you get really stuck just find a sensible spot and chance a free camp, very little trouble usually, worst that happens is you might get told to go in the morning.

Oh and C&CC is well worth joining for £40 odd as already suggested!

Honestly we've learnt to live a bit more by chance since having the van... and have found great places doing it this way
