I agree totally - we have found that following your nose is best!
We rarely use motorways as in the van A roads are much nicer!!
Often we dont book.
We have a rule that any campsite with a brown tourist signpost is best best avoided - we look out for handmade signs and youd be amazed how many there are, generally they are less than a tenner a night and we have rarely been disappointed, although there have been some iffy moments!!
Thing is these sites will not be full as they dont often have web pages etc. and we have found some amazing sites for next to nothing that are not listed anywhere, real old school!
If you get really stuck just find a sensible spot and chance a free camp, very little trouble usually, worst that happens is you might get told to go in the morning.
Oh and C&CC is well worth joining for £40 odd as already suggested!
Honestly we've learnt to live a bit more by chance since having the van... and have found great places doing it this way
