rear wheel studs

Post by monkeyboysee »

hi all,

i had to have my wheel nuts loosened by my garage as they had been overtightened by the previous owner. On one wheel, it was so bad they had to heat them with Oxyacetylene! three of the studs threads were damged getting the nuts off, how big a job is it to put new studs in if i get replacements? is it a simple operation or mechanic stuff? i'm not overly technical, strictly a have a go person.

cheers

its dead simple but you will need a 46mm socket to remove rear hub and a large breaker bar

It's for fitting longer studs but exactly the same process for standard length studs.
Oh I wouldn't class it as "dead simple" as that 46mm nut is ferkin tight and the studs need to be pressed in.

The above link explains it in detail though.

You can mallet out the existing stud and pull a new one through with a wheel nut and a spacer. It will probably knacker the radiused face on the wheel nut so have spares standing by or use a 19mm nut.

if you have a decent breaker bar mac tools and 5 foot scaffolding bar its not that tight also a decent press the job is simple , as with most jobs you need the correct tools
