How safe, or otherwise, are stretched tyres?

Post by KarlT »

Yeah I know it will be frowned on but is stretching tyres dangerous?
Safe limits? 1" stretch?
Quite like the look.
Anyone with with actual knowledge or experience?

Cheers for replies.

Yeah I thought the tyre people would say inch under tyre width.

P'Road, What are you saying is a reasonable stretch? Inch over tyre size?

Sensible hat on, there's no hard and fast rule, it's down to the intended use, the front of a rwd car might be fine with 195 on a 9" wheel but I wouldn't do that on the back of a bus.

Plus, the wheel on that car posted in the tyre manufacturing advisory looks like a prolapse. Stretch like that may not kill but it looks awful.

There's a site somewhere with loads of examples...

Absolute lunacy. Anyone caught running tyres like that should have an instant 12 points and a ban for running on 4 defective tyres and any business caught fitting them should be heavily fined.
Martin.

Diesel is an engine not a fuel.

I liked camping so much I went full time.

For my tuppence, i think it looks a bit "barry" although as long as your rims are within the manufactures permitted widths your ok, If not and your stopped by the police or Vosa, yep its points time.
