Hi all,
i have the original pierburg 2e on my 83 1900 water cooler. it has always been a bit rubbish. i have rebuilt it with the kit from brickwerks and that seemed to improve it a bit but its still temperamental.
Had been considering replacing with the Weber 34 DAT but have read not good things about those. has anyone got any experience of the Weber?
cheers
Neill

Re: Carb issues / replacement?
In the name of sanity do not fit a weber.!
Get a pierburg, VW thought it was a good idea, they didn't fit the weber because it sucks on a WBX engine. Difficult to set up and even correctly done the mpg is worse.
what's wrong with your carb or what symptoms are you experiencing?

Re: Carb issues / replacement?
thanks, yeah i had read that before.
its mainly the idle, doesnt want to run smooth when cold and then revs up too high when warm.
as i say it has improved since the refurb but its not great.

OK
Can I assume then that if you turn the idle screw to calm down the revs it won't tick over when cold?

Re: Carb issues / replacement?
OK
that narrows it down then
The auto choke mechanism is quite a complicated affair but once set up it should not give you any trouble.
Simply put, the spring inside the autochoke housing controls the choke flap and the fast idle.
The fast idle is set by depressing the accelerator once before cranking the engine.
As the spring heats up, it unwinds and opens the flap, at the same time it rotates the fast idle cam anti clockwise and eventually stops interfering with the throttle stop.
All that takes about 6 mins
while all that is happening the choke pull down unit opens the flap when you press the accelerator, so that it doesn't over fuel.(cold running)
A few questions then..
does the fast idle mechanism work?
you can see it here on the right..

and here a view underneath, again on the right with a better view of the steps.

Does the choke flap have a gap when it's shut (cold)
like this?

Re: Carb issues / replacement?
thanks for all the info kevtherev.
i will check all of this and see whats happening. great help, thanks.
this has also backed up my suspicion that a weber is not the way to go
