aef / cs oil capacity ?

Post by matt brighton »

Hi

Oil change with filter on the cs engine is 4 ltrs

same thing for the aef is 5 ltrs

having just swapped my cs for the 1.9 aef and doing a refill from dry to reset the hi/low marks on the newly installed dipstick - which is correct ?

Does the different shape sump account for the -1ltr difference or do the internals of the aef compared to the cs account for a +1ltr ?

Thanks for any advice

Thanks Jim

Just looking at the haynes and it says 5 ltrs inc oil filter.

Perhaps the different shaped sump means you need less - the only other variable I can think of if its not the internal capacity of the block is the different size size of the oil filter - then again - I bought one today for the aef and its about half the size of the mann one for the 1.6 cs :?:

The CS takes 4.5 with the filter as well, you may have been running it a bit low mate.

Thanks Kit

I always go by the dipstick reading regardless - but as you will appreciate - I have changed the sump and dipstick location by doing the swap so want to fill the dry engine with correct amount and then after running the motor and parking on level ground to put new hi/low marks on the dipstick if existing ones are out

Unless Im misreading it ... the VW instruction manual (Volkswagen Transporter englisch 6.81) that came with the van , and the VW Vanagon manual posted by oldie but goodie say its 4ltrs with filter change and 3.5 without (both figures approx)

I doubt + or - 500ml is gonna wreck the engine - just curious to know why the difference between the stated capacities of the aef and cs (engine internals / different sump / different oil filter capacity ?)

ps - yes - i do need to get out more

Thanks again for reply

Matt
