4th gear lockup

Post by Zazmeister »

Hi all

We have had this twice now, and it's completely flummoxed us. T25, 1984.

I came to a halt [once slowly, once I had to brake suddenly] in 4th gear, and both times the gearbox has locked itself in 4th gear. The first time, we couldn't get it out and the recovery guy moved it in 4th gear, and the garage said it was fine the next morning, cleaned the gearbox out and said that there was shrapnel in there but less than a week later, it happened again. I started it back up, got it moving in 4th and once it was moving it slipped back out of 4th and I could select gears again.

I just wondered if anyone else ever had this. Both times, it's when we have stopped in 4th. If we had an idea then we could pinpoint getting it fixed. If it happens going up a hill I'm pretty screwed getting it out again...not that we go up hills in 4th often but it would be nice to know what it might be.

Any thoughts would be good.

Thanks

3rd/4th synchro hub is cracked and breaking up, eventually it'll cam and lock out the gear selection completely, fraid it's a design flaw, modified from 1989 on but it's what gets most boxes (4th/5th on a five speed) rebuilt

Hi,
I've had similar problem. Got stuck in 3rd (had been sticky prior), managed to free wheel and get moving in 3rd, then popped out to neutral but could only use 1st & 2nd, drove back slowly toward home (10miles), a mile away from home and it seized up completely. I know nothing about motors. So presume it's a full gear box recon +. What did that cost you in the end and did it do the job?

interestingly had a this prob on a 5 speed a while back turned out the btaket on the g box which the selector rod opasses through was on upsidedown so whilst it still worked m the for aft (2-3/4-5 was a bit more throw on the stick and when i checked after it did this loads (again when stopping in 5th) the ball wwas almost out of the cup and hence locked , worth a look at first as it costs nowt to check

Which is exactly what happened eventually to our's, leaving us on a flatbed in Belgium

Don't over look what Metalmickey said though. Always check the ball and socket as they can part company. As a short-term measure you can use a cable tie to at least keep them together.

Hi,

Checked ball & socket - intact, although rubber shroud has gone.

Just done a scrape for gear box code found two numbers 091 301 103 D on side of transmission housing and 091 301 107 C on underside of clutch housing. Does anyone know if these numbers will assist with sourcing a correct recon gear box?

My van fix it man, is struggling for space for van in his yard and has advised a 3 day turn around to recon existing but if for some reason it can be reconditioned then I'd have to be able to supply a recon from someone.

Would like to have it reconditioned through Aiden T but turn around time's the issue. I'm based in Manchester maybe someone know someone that will do the job to allow for AT turn around. ??
