New steering wheel

Post by Dai »

I spoke to a few people about using the subaru steering wheel from the legacy in my syncro, the main reason was use the cruise control switch in the place its meant to be, but the reactions i got were less than favourable because the splines were different sizes and i would lose the self cancelling indicator mechanism.
So after a bit of pondering i decided that it had to be worth a go
Andy put this vid together of how we did it

I haven't seen the vid cuz it keeps freezing on Firefox but I would have thought joining the top half of the Subaru steering shaft to the bottom half of a T25 shaft would have done

All very good, but won't it obscure your view of the instruments ?

Nice work! So the Legacy wheel has a significantly larger diameter spline than the T3, so you made an adaptor like the VW "transition" wheels have and turned down the cancellation/horn ring to fit. Neat.

That 2.5 is very quiet too :D

I did look at that option first Andrew, but theres a bit more work involved than with adapting the wheel

Andy,The photo is taken with the camera rested on the top of the headrest at roughly eye level,it s close but you can see the indicator and highbeam warning led's,i may look at moving the led's down to the unused spaces below the oil and battery warning ones yet.

Ian,check out the link below the photo, the subaru spline is smaller than the VW one,so i chopped the boss out of an old caravelle steering wheel, junked the horn ring and reworked the Clockspring that powers the now defunked airbag and cruise control to carry the 12v for the horn.the cancelation ring was sawn off the vw wheel and bonded to the clockspring and works a treat.

ive been using the van for work for the past few days and it bliss being able to use the cruise properly now its at my fingertips instead of on the dash :ok
