wheel nuts

Post by Plasticman »

Well I suppose it could be in mech tech but its really more pertinnent here I think.
When was the last time you checked your nuts (wheel), if youve fitted them yourself fair enough but if its a new van to you or the tyre place has tweaked them on ! then maybe the next and best thing you could do is undo them one by one and tighten them yourself. might be the best 15 mins you spend.
I had occasion to remove a wheel today , very simple task 5 mins or so , to enable me to inspect something, I have all the right gear, so I attempt to remove the nuts... Nope.. try a shoulder drive and windy gun .. Nope..... 5 'cheater bar.... nope.. got the oxy gear out and warmed them dull red and they then cracked, undid a touch and 2 off the studs turned on the splines.b****r

ended up getting the small gas axe out and burning the nuts off the studs, thern drew the hub off and fitted a s/hand one. ok took 1/2 hour with all the gear to hand, but if you were on the road, on hols on way to ferry had a puncture...................enough said

There has been talk on here over the years from both sides of this fence.

"I could not get my wheel nuts off"

"My wheel nuts came loose"

In my case it was could not get them off = had to go to the local lorry garage where they put their HD windy gun on and eventually we got them off. I now do them up myself, check them often and carry a ruddy great bar and very HD socket with me.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

which is the whole point, though why do You carry all that? if youve done them up correctly you wouldnt need it. :rofl in the case I showed they were so tight that even the correct type socket did for them

Should be hex (six-sided) socket only for wheel nuts otherwise if you use ordinary socket you run the risk of chewing them up and running into probs. Not saying anyone here has, just a pointer for any newbies reading this thread

You disappoint me Mike. I thought East Yorkies could undo nuts like those with just their teeth

I know that feeling. couldn't move the ones on Gunther, both air guns (std and hd) were laughed at, broke 2 x 1/2" T bars and then had to get a 3/4" T bar and socket with a loooong pipe and eventually they moved
