tdi AFN AUX belt set up

Post by lloydy »

Hi all, I have a afn in my syncro and I'm having a few problems with the size of the alternator and aux side of the install. Basically, I've been left with a alternator that fouls the engine lid, and it also makes the jx dipstick not fit. Also the oil filler pipe does not fit. It seems as though I have the passat aux alternator mount and set up, which is big!
Seems on research that most people use the golf set up, which is much more compact. Is it a straight swap to do this? If so, what do I need?
Many thanks, Lloyd

Hi Lloyd,

there's a good post by Lee and langb20 and others here about getting the harmonic balancer, water pump pulley and alternator to setup right here - don't know if it helps.

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/tdi-w ... 61385.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I run the simpler AAZ setup - you remove the alternator mount from on top of the water pump and replace with an AAZ one. For this you need 4 bolts I think (from memory) and the spring which replaces the tensioner system on the tdis. For that you need an alternator with adjustment slot, rather than the tdi one which has fixed mounting holes. Some people suggest running an alternator with a clutched pulley but that's a matter of debate I think.

Hope you get it sorted soon

Ewen

Sadly on the longitudinal AFN block the bosses in the water pump area are different to the transverse one, so you can't just bolt-on the older style waterpump (which serves as part of the aux bracket mounting). On the longitudinal block the water pump is unified with the alt and pas pump mountings. When I did mine I used a transverse TDI block and everything else from the Passat, plus the JX bits I needed. Be interesting to hear of anyone who's got round this.

ah yes - longitudinal - didn't realise that. I have a transverse block too. Sorry to be no help at all!

thanks for the info :ok I know jed has a passat engine same as mine, and is using a AAZ set up? To be honest, mine fits now i've modded the engine lid. I'm more bugged by the dipstick issue than the oil filler. I might offer ian a challenge when i pop down and see him. See if he can route the dipstick to the number plate

Hi Lloyd,

not sure what your dipstick problems are, but my air filter sits where the battery was on the right hand side of the engine bay (intercooler's on the left), and routes along the back meaning I don't have space to fit the dipstick where I can read it without taking the engine lid off. I've just got used to this - not perfect I know. There is a bodge I've seen where people route a dipstick down the oil filler neck, but I don't really like this on account of the angle it would have to sit at, leading to less measurable deviation from low to high.

Hope you sort the alternator problem out

Ewen

Hi, mine is the same problem, really don't like the idea of having to remove the lid all the time. I know i will get used to it. It's also the fact that my dipstick hasnt been lengthened so reads fresh air (i'm using a wire coat hanger at the moment  So also need to get a bit welded on the end. I guess after a few months when i have a idea on what sort of oil loss (if any) it has, i won't be as bovered.
cheers

Always up for it! Pick a dry day though...

Maybe if someone could post up the correct lengths for the JX disptick and tube (all measured from the same point i.e. the top of the tube to o-ring collar, top-to high mark etc.) then a solution can be found.

What you really want is something like the SA set-up
