Any good mechanics in the Cambridge area?

Post by The Sherlock »

Any good mechanics in the Cambridge area? .. I'm having a bitch of a time with the engine...
I've got a 1987 2.1 ltr MV (was DJ) fuel injected engine..... evrything has been set up as per Haynes (timing etc), runs like a dream for 10mins, then looses power on acceleration / back fires.. turn it off , then start up, and it will alternate between good running and "pooh" again....
I'm starting to (sorry to say) plan to have a Mafia Hit on the bitch!!....
HELP!!!!

the owner before me fited a K & N air filter, so not the original, and not sucking in cold air from outside...
I'll go and change the pipes (if I can find where to get them)...
when I rev it up by the cable in the engine bay, it does sound like air being sucked in somewhere.... so you are probably right.....
do you know where i can get the hoses from?
cheers

Sorry Cambridge VW mechanics are proving very reluctant to work on watercooled engines I got turned away from them all! You may have to look further afield. A simple engine tune should be within the nouse of most mechanics. Try the Kwik Fit, next to Haywards Bikes opposite Aldi in Cambridge. There are a few T25 and Bay fans there inc. one of the testers and the manager. There is also Willingham Car sales, quite good there.

Cold air intake and airfilter wont be the problem.. any leaks from the airflow meter to the heads WILL cause running issues..

Hi guys.... thanks for the replies.....
I took off all the intake hoses, and checked them over, cleaned them up.... could not find any probs....
So I thought, maybe an elctrical fault (minefield I know)..... got out the good old WD40, took apart all connectors and gave them a little spray.... gave a liberal spray on all earth bolts I could find.... this still did not cure my problem :(
On a plus side, the temperature light came on in the dash board (did not know it was not working)...
Gave up for the night........
Just been out and scratched my head..... started it up again.... while pulling on the throttle in the engine bay, I grabbed and pulled each intake hose individually.... no change....
sprayed the WD40 on the vacuum pipes... hold on... was that a change in the engine???? .... gave all the pipes a push and twist, making sure they were all definately home.....
took it out for a drive..... and bloody hell!!! .... it's never drove so well.... acceleration was excelent.... no problems??
I do not want to shout too soon (or the van will hear me), it seems it may of been the vacuum pipes.... I'll come back in a while to let you know ......
thanks guys :)
