What COOLANT is best to use and where to get it from?

Post by cal »

Hi guys,

I am having to replace my main water pipe this week and am just wondering what coolant I should feed back into the system? I shouldn't think there is any coolant in there at the moment as it's been leaking for a couple of months now and iv'e been just constantly topping it up with water.

I have heared of the following but don't really know the difference between each or which is best?

G12 + -> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/G12-PLUS-VW-A ... 45fdbacaa5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

G12 ++ -> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Skoda ... 3a714a2599" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or these advertise as the original coolants?:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-Vw-F ... 3f1854174a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-Vw-F ... 3f18541b92" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anyone know a bit more?

Also I am assuming I need to use filtered water (Tap water run through a normal drinking water filter?) and buy 6 x 1.5 litres with a 50/50 ratio?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers!

Check in my thread about Flintstone, you will find I got mine from Germany, and worked out quite reasonable including shipping for 2 x 5ltr containers. It's G12, and pink. I will see if I can find a link for you, hold on.

Comma XstremeG30 meets VW G12/G12+ spec and is correct for all T25 WBX engines. Use at 50% all year round. You don't need G12++ unless you want to mix it with old blue stuff (but why would you???).
Available at a lot of motor factors, but watch out for BIG price differences (I buy the 20L and my two local places are £65 and £95 for same thing!)
Here is the BEST DEAL I could find online - with the postage comes out at 10 Litres for 40 quid. Not bad!

It's in my 1.9DG WBX, and meets all the right requirements. The only issue you may have is if there is wrong type coolant in yours already, mixing different types can cause mayo, sludge, so best to flush your system thoroughly, ensure no leaks, then add your coolant. I added 8ltrs of Coolant, and 8ltrs of water, and bled the whole system as per Simon Baxters instructions.

Hi guys,

Right, i'm not sure if there is blue coolant in the system an neither am I sure I can get all the coolant out (I don't have access to a hose or anything).

With that said. Is this suitable to put in my system if I do nothing else with it? ....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTOCHEM-1L-B ... 45fe3aec1e" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

... I have taken out the main water pipe so am planning on emtying what I can (Not sure how if anyone can help me on that aswell please?) then chucking this in if it's suitable? - I am on a bit of a budget now so understand I will have to replace it in around 2 year?

Cheers!

Okay, I have found this on the Just Kampers website. Which part is best to remove to drain the whole system? (I don't have access to a hose?) - So far, I have removed the metal water pipe on the bottom left of the picture.

Cheers guys!!

one of the pipes from rad is a good one to remove and flush everything through with a garden hose. Refit pipes, top up with water and a flushing agent and bleed, take it for a 20 miles round trip, allow to cool, drain and flush again with hose, making sure you get rid of any sludge in expansion bottle - then top up with antifreeze from Euro Car Parts and do the 50/50 mix - they seem to have the best deal on price.

I'm repeating myself here as I covered this a couple of months ago. Don't pay £60 - £90 for the stuff - thats insane.

Covkid - He doesn't have a hose.

Cal, don't buy the cheap blue stuff euro car parts recommend as it's wrong for your van (and thats insane. :roll: )
Looks like they do sell red G12+ standard too (but it didn't come up as recommended for my van - a 1.9DG - had to find it manually), at 17.59 for 5L (a full 40p cheaper than you paid for your G40 )

The Comma G40 (G12++) is a great deal at £18 for 5L, and will do your job just fine.

BTW just to make it clear, the price I quoted was for 20 litres of G30.

Okay that's wicked, thanks for all of the help given guys!! I think I have a good idea on what i'm going to do now!!

For anyone else that looks here in the future. The best deal and most appropriate no matter what coolant you have in your system (G12 ++) can be found on the following link;

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m1b0s4325p575 ... Litre_-_5L_" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is £17.99 inc. VAT for 5 L. Including delivery has cost me £43.97 for 10 litres :ok

Cheers again everyone! Great help and hope it helps everyone else in the future at a fraction of the time :D
