syncro diesel bracketry

Post by xriss »

any ideas how they differ as would like to put on a late exhaust systen the three bolt & olive backbox...i somehow seem to have an early set up on my 91 with the sleeved back box & j pipe...i know the change over was reputed to be around mid 89 there for i aught not to have the early set up...also reputibly this was for the intoruction of cats.. a little perplexed any info greatly appreciated folks and how easy is it to obtain the late brackets needed to accomodate the late jpipe and backbox etc...cheers all:)

You could make some, they're only bits of bent metal :)

Sadly I don't, I made the same swap as you and ended up making some as they were a silly price from VW, and couldn't find any elsewhere.

Is there a definitive answer as to when the exhaust systems changed? The exhaust system on my 1990 manufactured Multivan is a 3 bolt and olive style whilst my white van has the slide on and clamp style. This, of course, goes against the accepted wisdom of a change over in 1989 as the white van was built in (very) late 1992.

tsnot an early late thing it's a 'very noisy' commercial tractor engine or 'noisy' people carrier tractor engine thing, post 89, you'll find most vans and pickups had the simpler one and only the westy's and velle's had the extra sound deadening version and even then it probably varied market to market as cost/no cost spec/option like decent mirrors - lots of nice vans didn't have the best mirrors and you have to wonder why :?:

The rear sump guard and its associated tinware is very different between my two Syncros. Like Aidan says there is a commercial spec and a civvy spec. I have not tried to see if its possible to swap one to the other but the set up on the Multivan is quite comprehensive. Im having it duplicated in 1.5mm Galvanised sheet ATM

in my case im trying to see if i can fit the late system on my 91 16" that has on it the early sestem no late brackets and the sleeved jpipe in to the smaller 60cm silnencer the late system has the three bolt set up olive and the silencer is 80cm long...im thinking the lengh might be the restricting factor here ...fouling on the larger rear center bash plate bars....think a lil more reseach is in order:)
i think noise restrictions plus cat led to the larger silencer hence the late brackets etc...but dosent ring true mine being a 91 albeit a 16"

Those bits look nothing like the brackets a stock late TD Syncro I'm working on at the mo. It has the flanged joints.
