It depends on which type of bumper you have...

Metal or big plastic ones?

I recently removed mine and from memory.....

Remove plastic end caps first......There is a hidden screw behind a cover/plug on the side towards the back of the end cap and one screw/bolt on the front. they also have locating lugs so be gentle ish....

Next just remove the four bolts that hold the front bumper on....two visible on the front face, two on the bottom horizontal bit. One of mine was rusted and rounded (By a previous owner) and had to be cut off and drilled so a good soaking with "plusgas"/penetrating oil overnight would help. back bumper was much the same I think.

Hope this helps...please don't shoot me if I have gotten any of this wrong.........my memory can play tricks on me sometimes, but I remember finding it relatively straight forward to do (apart from the stubborn bolt)

Good luck

that sounds more like the rear bumper..the front all you need to do is round off the 2 screws that hold the endcaps on to the wing type area then snap off the 4 studsthat are under grommets along the front of the bumper :D

Well I did say my mind plays tricks on me.......the front probably doesn't have the bolts underneath only across the front !! sorry

I have just checked on VAGCAT http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2/1982/4/56/60072/

The bumper on there doesn't look like mine...nor the carat one either.....Mine doesn't have grommets or covers or rubbing strips, and no holes to attach them with either!!! :?

To view the images on vagcat you have to register but it is free and well worth it.

Old post I know, but instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd ask here seeing as its related. I want to remove my front bumper so I can sort out the surface rust etc, but am stumped on how to get the end caps off. I uderstand about the hidden screw on the sides, but the front bold is a round domed type, and I cannot access the rear of it to undo.

Anyone advise?

The round domed thing you mention is an "allen key" bolt so there should be an allen key shaped hole/recess in the center of it....probably full of paint or crud

Had a look, and nothing, looks like the previous owner fitted gate studs, which means I will have to remove the bumpers (Was going to anyway to paint) just to remove the end caps, all are the same as below..

Bumper end caps are supposed to be fitted with those kind of short coach bolts :ok

I see, but how on earth is one supposed to remove an end cap without having to remove the whole bumper.? I have tried to feel underneath to gain access to the rear, but the bumper iron is in the way :( No biggy really as I need to remove both bumpers anyway for repaint, but just curious more than anything.
