Which fuel pipe size? Confused.

Post by timski »

Hi Guys,

For info: 2.1 dj. 1900.

I found a small leak in the fuel pipe that runs from the petrol tank back to the engine bay. It runs along the underside of the chassis and is about middway between the front and rear axle (or directly below the middle of the sliding door when shut).

I want to replace the hose but I'm not sure what size it is.

I found 5mm hose on justkampers that says it is suitable for 2.1
http://www.justkampers.com/shop/t25/ori ... 10583.html
Also on justkampers a 7mm hose also suitable for 2.1
http://www.justkampers.com/shop/t25/ori ... 11668.html

On Brickwerks I found 5.5mm
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?p ... t&Itemid=3
And again on Brickwerks I found 8mm
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=114

Needless to say I'm a bit confused :?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim.

Why are you confused....the Brickwerks 8mm pipe says:
"Nylon Fuel Pipe to replace underbody fuel lines on Fuel Injected T3 Models"

And that's the pipe you say you need...isn't it?

Buy the pipe from someone who uses it every day...rather than a company who sell pots and pans.
There's no 'r' in bought!

yes if you read the 5.5mm pipe description on brickwerks it is for "T3 fuel tank breather pipes."

Which fuel pipe size? Confused.

Post by KylieKamper87 »

I used the 7.7/8mm on my 2.1 fuel injected, all the pipe was the same size on mine from the pump all the way to injector, if you have the little plastic pipe that goes through the bulkhead I would recommend the stainless steel replacement brickwerks do too. I replaced all our lines , they looked fine from outside but where all wrecked internally when I took them off

Cheers

Thanks guys. I suspected the 8mm fuel pipe would be the right one but feel safer having it confirmed. I don't see any harm in seeking confirmation when it comes to safety.

Hi Guys,

OK I'm still a bit unsure about which parts to order.

It seems it is the fuel return pipe that I need to replace, so as you guys already confirmed the 8mm is the correct fuel hose to go for.

I'm a little unsure how the fuel hose connects to the tank though. There seems to be a thicker section that the 8mm goes into and then that connects to the tank. I am hoping that I will be able to remove the VW clip and push the new 8mm hose into that and then use a new fuel clip to secure it. Will that be OK or from experience will the short section of hose need replacing too? Or will it collapse if i try to tighten a hose clip on it? Does it need an insert to sto that?

I am referring to this section here
Image.

Also at the bulk head end it seems to go into another section of thicker hose. Is it the same procedure for thise end )see image below) ?

And the other side of the engine bay, another section of different hose comes out of the thicker secition I mentioned above, which goes to the small cylinder that has two pipes coming out from both sides.

I thought I might as well replace that section while I am doing an order to save on postage. Any idea what part that is? This one maybe?

Ah and another question. What is the best way of getting those VW clips off? They look they may be difficult to remove.

cut them off.

I don't see what you're confused about.

you ask..
I'm a little unsure how the fuel hose connects to the tank
then answer it

replace what you see. like for like, what's so confusing timski?

Yes sorry, I'm making a pig's ear of explaining myself on this one. I think my experience with changing the water pipes under the van has scared me a bit - those rusty metal inserts was an unexpected find :-)

I wanted to avoid cutting that short section of rubber pipe that goes into the tank as I can't see that on Brickwerks so I'm worried it's one of those parts that is difficult to find/replace? So I'm hoping that if I could remove the old clip I will be able to reuse the existing section, i.e. just push the 8mm hose into it and then resecure with a fuel clip?

Hopefully that's as clear as mud now :-)

OK I stopped pussyfooting around and cut the buggers off and now I understand how it all hangs together. And I've realised what was causing me the confusion. It didn't look right to me. How could the fuel injection hose (7.3mm) be smaller than the underbody fuel line (8mm) when it looks much fatter to the eye. Then I realised the 7.3mm is the internal bore size. Doh!!

Anyway, I've ordered the underbody fuel hose and the fuel injection hose and hose clips. Hopefully we'll be going away at the weekend now :-)

I think some times you can have too much information, and you just need to get on with it, and as you say ..."see how it hangs"
