2.1 DJ engine wiring problem.

Post by Zimbok »

Hi,

I'g be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction with some wiring I’m not sure about.

If you look at the photos below, in the first one I have three sets of wiring circled. A fella looking at it yesterday joined bits of wire together to try and figure out what's what (as per the photos and it doesn't look pretty but will be replaced properly)

1) Two wires, one bare yellow/red wire (not connected to anything) and one brown. The brown runs behind the engine somewhere and I'm sure the guy said it was something to do with an oil sensor.

2) One red/yellow wire. This wire has been connected to the Coolant Temperature Sender below/behind the pulley in the second photo (the wire goes from yellow/red to black to red to blue! for the sake of testing and will be sorted out)

3) Two wires, one yellow and one blue(ish). Neither is connected to anything (ends taped up separately).

Help greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Umm, what does and doesn't work on the dash?

Oil pressure light?
Temp gauge?
It runs fine?

It seems to run fine but I've only been about half a mile up the road and back. Too chicken to go further.

Oil pressure light. Well that's another story... there isn't one there. There is a void where one should be. Recently had engine loom changed due to wiring burn out. Had a new second hand loom fitted and the bulb (LED diode?) is not there anymore. I guess it was taken out or do they blow / melt, I don't know. So that's also part of my "what are theses wire for" dilemna.

Temperature gauge goes to max with warning light flashing when engine running, even when starting from cold. However if just turning key without actually starting engine the light will flash a few seconds and go out, but no needle movement.

So probable oil pressure light problem, definite temp gauge problem, but it seems to run fine. :?

Oook. You DEFINITELY want an oil pressure light.

Temperature gauge goes to max with warning light flashing when engine running, even when starting from cold. However if just turning key without actually starting engine the light will flash a few seconds and go out, but no needle movement.

I think you just found one of your oil pressure sender wires.

The low-rev sender is between the pushrod tubes on the left hand (Euro driver's side) lower of the engine.
The high-rev sender is in front of the water pump pulley.

From the looks of your pic, that's the one you've got to the temp gauge.

Cheers for that. I think I'm getting to understand it a bit more but still a way to go. I have just come in from tidying up the wires (soldering and heat thrinking) but I suppose looking prettier doesn't solve the problem.

What I can see then is:

1) the brown of the two wires leads to the sender between the push rod tubes (very tight squeeze but I managed to get under the van). I have the accompanying red/yellow wire still going nowhere.

2) The single red/yellow wire. This does indeed go to the high-rev sender is in front of the water pump pulley (although I wrongly identified this as the Coolant Temperature Sender - in fact I bought the wrong part as well)

3) The two wires, one yellow and one blue(ish). Neither is connected to anything (ends taped up separately). Not sure what these are still.

Going from what Adrian says have I got the brown from from (1) above and the single red/yellow from (2) above wired correctly? And any idea for the other three unconnected wires (the single red / yellow) in (1) and the two wires in (3).

Help much appreciated.

they're not senders they're oil pressure switches.. just to be clear.
