1983 1.9 thermostat housing

Post by jrt »

Hello, had a nightmare tonight removing my water pump and thermostat housing bolts etc, even after a good dousing in plus gas for a few days. On the pump i've got one last allen headed bolt to remove[pipe to pump] but it will not budge and the head is getting worn/bigger. Is the best option to cut the head off with the dremel/metal saw? As for the thermo housing one bolt has snapped and had to be cut off so i could remove the housing but i've damaged the face of the housing around the gasket area, can this be repaired with anything or is it shagged bearing in mind i'll still have to try and drill out the old bolts [can they ?]
thanks David.

Early thermostat housings are like rocking horse "pooh" so try to salvage it if you can. You could always take it off and take it to a local engineering firm to see if they can remedy any damage you have done and remove any snapped bolts

I've got my dad onto it[very old engineer] at the moment-see how it goes. Finally removed the bolt holding the water pipe tonight and removed horizontal pipe to remove pump but it seems to be sticking[the pump] a bit on the stud[are they studs?] behind the flywheel. Loads of lubrication and jiggling but just can't free it totally. Anyone have any tips on releasing it without causing any more damage, don't want to force it too much, I've given it a good spray with plusgas and will have another go tomorrow.
cheers David.
