It's attached to the water pump under the black plastic housing

Check that the plastic housing hasn't warped before you put it back on, I changed my thermostat and it kept leaking whereas it was fine before. Presumably the heat builds up tensions in the plastic that causes it to be out of shape when you remove it. I just couldn't work out why I couldn't get it to reseal - mine had gone oval so the o-ring didn't make full contact. A new one soon solved it.
You may have no problem but if you get a leak that is what may have happened.

Thanks for the advice regarding the thermostat housing very much appreciated could you give any advice on the following? Heres where i'm at at the moment.

1. Oil in coolant - will replace oil cooler hoping its not the HG.
2. After bleeding following Simons brickyard thread the engine overheated, the temp gauge never showed the over heat, the LED
works on the Gauge and the needle never goes above halfway. Possible renewal?
3. Following Simons bleed thread the engine and heaters were hot but the coolant from the rad bleed screw was cold and not
much air. Could the thermostat be buggered or the water pump?
4. During the overheat the fan never kicked in at all(probably because the coolant in the rad was cold) i tested the fan using the
Haynes Manual procedure and it works fine on both speeds. Should i replace the thermo switch on the rad while i'm at it?
5. Before i drained and bled the system the van never overheated to my knowledge, could i have put a massive airlock in it?

I may have a possible HG problem but i read on the brickyard that the oil cooler can corrode and let oil into the water so eyelids crossed this is the problem.

Is it possible that i put a massive airlock in the system when i bled causing the over heat? The van hasn't overheated prior to me draining and bleeding.

Could there be a problem with the thermostat or water pump?

Are there any other switches/sensors i should be replacing while i'm working on the cooling system?

Many thanks,

Rob.

Sounds like an airlock rob, try leaving the header tank cap off whilst you're bleeding the system. Seems strange that you have heaters but the bleed water is cold?

Also, when you say it over-heated, did it just bubble over or did you check the temperature of the water? Sounds like your gauge is working to me, so try it again.
It's not rust, they're heat blisters....

Thanks Evsi, i will try with the cap off, when it overheated there was steam coming from the engine(!) so rapidly switched her off, also i never got any where the full 16 or so litres coolant/water in, i'm guessing only 8 or so litres came out.

Certainly sounds like an airlock, or some kind of blockage Rob. When up to temp, check front to rear water pipes to see if you can narrow down the location of the blockage.

Also as per pm, try flushing the system out fully, and when refitting the rad, try and fill it partially first.

Cheers Micky will definately try that also, gonna put a new thermostat in to. I'm hoping the oilcooler is the cause of oil in the water. Off tool buying now. :D
