Changed my gearbox today for a 2 litre one rather than the 1600 one that is fitted to my 2L air cooled! What a differance!! The old one was crunching when hot when selecting reverse and first. I picked one up from ebay for a bargin price so was worth the risk. When I took the gearbox off the engine it was a bit of a strugle as the shaft came adrift and was stuck in the fly wheel. I assume this is why the gearbox is knackered? With the gearbox on the floor,the shaft spins the way it should but if you pull it it comes out about 10 or 12 inches! is that normal? the new one I fitted didnt! A machanic friend let me use his ramp for a while. Would not want to attept it on the drive!!! :ok
