DG engine clacking noise :(
Hi Guys
Gutted - Bought a camper - drive it 60 miles home and by the time I have it home it sounds like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74xY8zoVeBw
It's more of a clacking than a thudding but it does get loader blipping revs or putting on load so my theory on hydraulic tappets I think is out.
Any opinions greatly received
Stoo

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
um er ffftt...........possible valve tap on head. HG too thin/old/worn down thereby the valve are hitting ever so slightly. I replaced my HG with with a thicker one. The one with two punch holes not one.

Firstly..
welcome to the forum
nice first post.
have you tried using the search or the site wiki?.. it's quite common for lifters to be noisy if..
wrong oil, poor oil, poor oil pressure, lazy tappet. is the cause
do you know if the oil has been changed recently?
A search will throw up lots more information.

if its clickety clack change the oil and filter make sure its the correct spec ie 15-40 mineral. (although over 60miles you would have thought it would have got hot and thin enough)

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
Hi Guys
wonderfully quick response.... I know little about these engines and I go from despair to glee depending on what I read on this and other forum posts - and see on youtube.
I'll try the oil change - Is it worth a flush too?
The service history always says 10:40 semi synthetc but I was confused with it starting off the journey OK and then getting worse.
But some engines sound much worse than mine and turn out to be lifters:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H29jOzSSYs!!!!!
I'll try an oil change tomorrow night and see.
Cheers guys

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
Mineral oil should be used, not any kind of synthetic my friend.
What mileage is on the engine?
I used some thicker oil which was for a diesel engine which quietened down my engine (183k), but plan on replacing that with 10/40 Mineral this summer.

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
It's a recon on only 30k
The camper is actually on 147k but it had a recon at 87k and this one at 117k
Last one cost £1200 parts only so wasn't that cheap (not sure of supplier)
Unfortunately this bus has a cat so my normal Valvaline racing oil I use in the mini isn't suitable.
By the way - judging by the age can remove the cat???
Thanks

Where are you located? The Cat maybe a requirement by law if you are Stateside.

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
hi Micky
I'm in UK so I think I'm ok. Anyway no news yet. local Halfords don't stock the filter so I was unable to do the oil change/flush.
i want to use for the weekend so I'm going to be brave/foolish and drive it the 30mile round trip to work and back in rush hour. A nice mix of queues and motorway should warm it up sufficiently to clear the blocked tappet and if it's not that then blow up the engine....
more news will follow

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
Make sure you buy a decent oil filter, like one from Mann [Brickwerks sell them] Cheapo oil filters can be the undoing of an engine... And as the others say, use the correct oil. Oh, and put some fresh oil to almost overflowing in the filter before you fit it.

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
so i've got 5 mins to go with it running with oil flush. No change of noise yet. i's still a bit concerned that it sounds worse if i give it throttle. if it's on the backoff it's silent. What do you guys make of that?
I'm hoping that with the new oil in it'll be nice and quiet!!!
if it's my other option. ... a dodgy little end then I'll have loads of bits of metal in my oil....
will soon find out

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
If the lifter doesn't go quiet after a a good drive ( 20 mins) on new oil then it's shagged, and will need to be renewed.
I don't know why you thought Halfords would stock twenty year old filters
get used to using GSF or other outlets

Re: DG engine clacking noise :(
lol- was spur of the minute decision and Halfords was open at 7.30pm. Normally use GFS and Camberley.
So flushed and refilled with oil. it's still there
It's definately worse under load so I can't see how it can be the tappets. How can tappet load change with engine load?? however that said when revs are high you can't hear much anyway !!!
I can understand at really low revs and under load it could be louder as oil pressure will be low...
Oh and oil was really clean with no bits in meaning there's not likey to have been bits of small end floating around the sump.
Think i may need some tappets...
How long should I allocate fitting them and any good links on web around?
Cheers for advice so far.....

Hi mate,
try looking in the wiki (second button in up there ^^^^^^^)
or click this https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Hy ... _explained
so,try and complete some of your details re location, van etc, you'll probably find people are really willing to pile in with help on here but you need to play ball
If your into Valvoline and mini's I am assuming you know your way round an engine? If so you are into normal diagnostics, pop the rocker covers and check the rocker gear, do a compression test or leak down if you can.
This sort of stuff will help you figure out if it is just a knackered lifter or a dropped valve etc.
Cheers,
MM
