Caravelle to Camper?

Post by tforturton »

If you convert a Caravelle to a camper (by fitting a roof, bed, kitchen etc), do you have to register this with the DVLA? And does it make a difference to the insurance?

Also makes it alot more valuable hence the rarity of unmolested tin tops..

So at what stage does it stop being a minibus, and start being a camper? When do you have to do the advising?

There are a lot of very specific criteria which you have to meet to register as a camper / motorhome and it's getting quite strict. I think there's a guide of what you have to do on the VOSA website. You may also have to take it yo a VOSA test station for inspection in some cases.

Seems you don't have to re-register it if you don't want to.....

No. As long as you inform your insurance company of the change to keep your insurance legal and valid.

Wouldn't make any difference once it's registered do what you want. There's no camper police.

I looked into it with mine but honestly couldn't see any real benefit from the hassle of doing it. Mine was already registered as a bus not a van so wouldn't have made any difference to speed limits and I had it on classic insurance for £98 a year so registering it as a camper wouldn't have made it any cheaper. It just seemed like way too many hoops to jump through for no real benefit.
