Croatia, Montenegro, and Athens if theres time!

Post by mrmule »

Hi All,

The four of us are going in our MV in about a month, and we're currently planning all the bits we're likely to need. This is by far the furthest and longest we'll ever have camped.

As a MV, theres no fitted appliances, so looking for a bit of advice on a fridge. Our local camping 'warehouse' has a one of these for £180. It has fridge and freezer capabilities, and runs on mains, 12v and gas.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they any good? We wont need the freezer function really, but its the same price as the other fridges, so why not? And even though I plan on having the leisure batter fitted before I leave, I wonder if it'd be a good idea to have it on freeze function while we're driving, and then just switch it off while we're parked up, so it doesnt drain the leisure batt, but will remain cool until we set off again.

Any flaws with this plan?

B40 Thermoelectric 12v DC Portable Fridge achieves 20°C below ambient

In Croatia last year,

That means inside that fridge if its running on gas (It will only be like a cool box on 12V anyway) will be a hot 30*C :shock:

It shouldnt be as hot as it was when we went wen you are there but if you run that fridge on gas inside the van you will be waking up really ill as it will be exhausting inside the van. If you want a propperly working fridge or freezer your going to have to go down the compressor fridge route like a few of us have and that just runs on 12v. They are the dogs "Balls", but like anything else good they will cost you.

or this one might be worth a bid, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-En ... 960wt_1194" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ta Jed.

I didn't plan on using the gas function. Rather run it off the sine wave inverter. Handy to have the gas function anyway, in case we're moored up for a few days, I won't be relying on electric, particularly if we're remote.

The one I have seen was 30deg below ambient for the fridge, and lower if in freezer mode. Sounds good to me for £180. And yes I hope it won't top 50 degrees; that's one reason we planned to go in June, and not July or August!!

I like the Engle one; shame it's in Sheffield. Courier shouldn't be too expensive though. It is a lot smaller than the one I saw though.

You might get lucky and find one cheap if your looking. Lots of land rover chaps buy them for Morocco trips over the winter and they seem to come up for sale again around now so you might get lucky. When your going through Croatia or indeed Slovenia or around that area and looking for campsites on the internet search Auto camps. They are the low end camp sites that cater for campervans and motor homes and you can usually get a pitch for £20 a night and they are not massive commercial ventures.

This site will see you right for some good wild camping spots (its in spanish though) http://www.furgovw.org/mapa_furgoperfecto.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's been above 30deg several days over the last week here in the Balkans already...

I ended up winning this. Tried it out this weekend. Although a little small, it pretty much suits our needs. Thanks for the heads up fella.
