Gearbox drain plug

Post by JNW »

I'm replacing my 5-speed 1991 gearbox oil. Here's a photo of the magnetic drain plug.

Is this normal or bad?

Don't know.

It had a recon engine fitted about 6000 miles ago. Might have been done then. Or not. It wasn't too hard to release the plug.

Thats not unusual....especially as that could well be tens years worth. It's all very fine stuff, NO BIG BITS..
I would be using a 75W90 GL4/GL5 semi synthetic (as a multigrade this is a little thinner which improves cold shifting)
Takes about 4 litres (fill on the flat until it spills over)

Or it could be 21 years worth too.

From what I have seen in real life and from others on here, that is fairly usual.

Nothing unusual there ... as Martin said check it for larger pieces but those 'filings' are to be expected. 75W90 GL4/GL5 semi synthetic is the way forward now.

Great, thanks guys.

I left it to drain overnight. Trying to get as much gumk out as possible. It was a thick brown metallic colour.
I had already bought Comma 80W90 on a previous recommendation. Will that be ok?

Quite tricky to get it in - used a length of soil pipe with a funnel in half at each end.

Try warming the bottle in hot water for a while it'll flow better

As long as it's GL4 NOT GL5.
