insurance hike for continent

Went to France a few weeks ago and phoned insurance to tell them I would be going. They asked me dates and then said ok. 5mins later they phoned back to say it will cost you £25 if you want to have fully comp ins. same as in uk, otherwise it will be the lowest level ins of the country you visit. This is first time they have done this, I don't know if it's new policy for them or they just never bothered telling me I would have been on basic ins on prev visits. I have read of some ins co's doing this but others don't. I believe Saga don't do it for instance. My French friends say their ins covers them automatically at full level for any eu countries. So the moral is check with your ins before going abroad and change companies as I will be doing next year.
