Carb rebuild kit for 2E3 - worthwhile/difficult?

Post by sjmtlewy »

I've seen a lot of people on here saying that putting on a rebuild kit is a good idea with these old carbs. Is this just a case of dismantling, cleaning, replacing and rebuilding? Or does it play hell with the idle speed/mixture/any other settings that then need resetting?

I've got no specific complaints about how my carb is working, other than general sluggishness, dodderyness etc. It did go through a period of getting clogged with "pooh" a year ago or so, but Mr RAC stripped and cleaned it quite thoroughly (though I have a vague memory of noticing that a gasket was split), after which it has been much better. But if it would help it be as good as it can be, i'm all up for it.

Adjusting...
idle speed will need a tacho for complete accuracy
and mixture will need a gas anyalyser for the same reason.

replacing the gaskets will stop any air leaks affecting performance, making sure everything attached to the carb is working and not leaking air, harming the carbs performance.

Sure.. I get the benefits of correct adjustment, I got my local garage to set the idle & mix at the same time as the MOT. What I was wondering was whether it would be possible to fit the rebuild kit (http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... rd=rebuild" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) without messing that up?

Rebuild kit is easy. Keep everything clean including the outside of the carb before you dismantle, and make sure you dismantle on a tray or similar so you have less chance of losing any small parts

All done - pretty pleased with the result (it still runs!). Also, it seems a bit better than before - bit more power when accelerating up hill or under load.

The kit was a bit baffling though, quite a few of the bits weren't quite the same as the old ones and there were loads of washers and little gaskets that I couldnt see a se for (though I didnt completely dismantle every little bit). I didnt even attempt to replace the float needle, as it looks totally different:
