OK We tried to check the timing of a 2 L Cu but we could not find anything on the fan that resembled a notch.
...and with the timing light on still nothing..
So do I find TDC using the distributor when No 1 is firing and mark the fan?

A/C timing problem
You can double check by poping the valve cover off and look to see if cylinder 1 valves both closed. And/or a dowel in the spark plug hole. The dizzy arm will point to no 1 position 2 times per cycle.

Thanks Bob
Do I mark the fan at Zero from the gauge above, once TDC is found ?

Re: A/C timing problem
The timing mark on mine is a small mark on the back of the belt groove on the fan. I had to take off the fan basket and the timing scale and turn the engine by hand until the rotor arm was pointing at the notch in the rim. Once in this position I used an LED torch an could see the tiny circular mark on the belt groove. Once I'd found it I painted on a dot of paint so it would show up under the timing strobe.

Ah Ha!
Thanks Boxy... I'll take a look for that first, I just knew it had to be there

Found a photo I think I took when I was searching for my timing mark. Maybe the position of the key-way will help point to it as well?

That's uncanny...
I know that keyways are a good indicator on crankshafts as to TDC, after a bit of scratching heads we could see the keyway was in the right place, so tomorrow we'll hunt the bugger down
