Replacing water pipes alternative

Has anyone replaced the front to back water pipes with hose?

Don't really want to buy used pipes, as they will need replacing again.

Stainless seems expensive, and hassle to take the tank out.

So was thinking of using some sort of good quality hose........ Like a domestic hot water one?

be carful what you use.

the blue stuff( gas or water not sure which one)
closes up when heated - saftey reasons- overheating cooling system is enough to do this so be careful!

stick to the original, long term anything else will give probs, use pip with a ring / bur on the end else the rubber pipe will slide off , also make sure its steel or if plastic has an insert or else you will not be able to keep the clip tight!

So will ordinary car radiator hose not do if you can get the correct length and diameter?
I remember a couple of rear engined cars way back that used standard reinforced rad hose.

yes no prob , also hydraulic hose ect , lots of stuff that will do


just need to make sure if your clamping there is a steel insert to prevent crushing as per vw plastic hoses

You can fit the stainless ones without removing the tank.....just make sure you get the correct ones.
Half a day,with tea breaks......... most awkward bit is removing the old pipes.

The blue stuff will fold up if you overheat...........I've had this on a Jeep Cherokee bodge.

If you are looking for something stiffer than standard car hose you could use marine wet exhaust hose. Not cheap though. Like THIS.

I did have a look at this a while back but I went for originals when they were still available. There is hose out there that might fit the bill iff supported correctly. I used to use this in the brewing, it will go floppy at high temps but so long as its supported along its length and without too sharp a curve it might do the job

There is a load of high performance hose out there like marine diesel exhaust that would probably be even better it just needs some buying and testing!

I think the VW pipes are 38mm OD from memory, but it would be sensible to go from the coolant junction to the rad one one side eliminating the joins.

Must be shed loads of industrial stuff that would do the job....all though its a critical function....its not a particularly demanding application.

Why not bite the bullet, go for stainless and do the job properly??
