Crankshaft Diagram

Post by Evsi »

Afternoon (i would say good, but it just isn't....)

Does anyone have a diagram of a 1.6td crankshaft by any chance? I'm 99% sure that my low oil pressure issue is due to incorrect fitting of the main bearing shells, but cannot find anything on the net or from VW about the correct layout. Any help would be great as the van is meant to be going to France in 3 weeks....... :(

Mate, thanks for that, it's certainly a start. I can't seem to find anything for the jx which is effin annoying. I have managed to get another set of shells but a different make to see if there are any differences, but i'm running out of ideas.

Thanks again

Well you can't actually fit them wrong, the crank would lock up if the shells were the wrong way around but the groved main bearings need to be fitted in the block and not the main bearing caps.....However, thats not to say the shells themselves are correct for the journal size.
Have you had the crank re-ground, are the bearings the correct oversize?
Was the crank enfloat checked? max wear 0.37mm (0.07 - 0.17 new)
Journals checked for ovality and taper?
Oil pressure relief valve checked (they can get stuck) and cleaned?
If the bearings were re-used did they go back in exactly the same positions?

Hi Martin,

I've done some digging on this and it seems that VW did change the layout at some point, changing the No4 bearing to a full groove shell setup, but that still shouldn't cause an oil pressure problem i agree.

End float was spot on and the journals all measured to within standard tolerances radially. I did fit new thrust washers and a new oil pump also, so as you say, unless a new part is incorrect or faulty, i'm all out of ideas.

As soon as the weather dries off a little, i'll start over :(

Thank you for your input mate.

So all the original bearings are back where they came from?
And the oil pressure is?

I haven't put the originals back in yet, been too wet to get underneath. If it clears up by this evening i'll get back on it.

Cheers Martin.

All sorted, the shells were incorrect. For anyone who is interested, it looks like VW changed No4 bearing to a full groove shell for better cooling.

Cheers for your replies Martin.

Glad to hear you have discovered the reason for your low oil pressure....of course excessive bearing to journal clearance is often responsible for oil draining off/low pressure but usually because or wear.
