1.7 KY to turbo
Has anyone converted a 1.7D KY to turbo?
I have found a few links to German’s who have done the conversion using parts from a JX.

There are also a few you tube clips, but I was wondering if there is any experience in 8090. It seems from my reading a good fit due to the KY’s superior cooling abilities.
Also, from what I have been reading the KY is a good engine and owners should be proud not ashmed of it.

I have always been very sceptacle of any n/a engine being pressure charged mate. They weren't built for it end of.
It's not rust, they're heat blisters....

I see you point. However, is there any evidence to suggest this really is a bad idea. It looks relatively straightforward to do.Taken from German website
- remove KY intake and exhaust manifold and replace with JK
- install JX Turbo unit
- swap FY injection pump for JX injection pump
- replace KY sump pan for JX sump pan
- swap injectors and glow plugs
- swap injector lines
- reconnect glow plug circuit and fuel cut off
- swap KY oil filer bracket with JX oil filter bracket and cooler
Many things are still not clear to me as I have never seen or owned a JX for example: the timing issues and setting up the turbo. I am sure I’ve missed loads out but this is just my initial interpretation of the German text.

As with all engines, they are designed and built by engineers (except French ones...) and pressure charged engines are designed to manage the higher pressures and forces exerted on them. N/A engines are generally made weaker (i use this term loosely) because they don't need to engineered as strongly.
To put it into context, I have seen many conversions done over the years - some have managed a few thousand miles on extremely low boost (but very minimal power gain), most fail pretty much instantly or well before they would naturally. The question is, what do you want? If you want turbo power, get a turbo engine

I agree that the KY engine is awesome but I don't see the point in turbo'ing it.
40mpg did me all day long. Why change that?
I have never heard of anyone do it on here.
You need to get yourself a good look at a TD engine but your list is pretty good.
Timing is easy - no need to worry about the turbo.

If you want turbo power, get a turbo engine
it's not that I want to to become a boy racer. I would just like some more torque on hills and so that I am not embarrassed by milk floats

No seriously the KY is a solid engine and I might just give this a go if I can get the parts together over time.

I love my KY and will be interested in your Turbo Mod if and when you get round to it, I wonder is there any way of finding out how the Germans who have carried out this conversion have fared.
In the meantime try a Diesel System Cleaner. I was beginning to think that the stories about the KY being gutless were true but I had a 'magical' improvement after using Diesel Magic, though there are other products that will do the same job of course! (Thought I'd better put that just in case!)
So let them say all they like, I'll just keep smiling and Slipping past those Gas stations and Loving my KY.

Hi,
thanks for your resonses. My KY is running sweet (apart from pesky air getting into the fuel line some where and it draiing back sometimes). The last owner who had van since its conversion in 1990 spent 2000k on a new head and other engine bits and bobs so I'm hopping it will be a good lump for some time to come.

Fit a non return valve available at most motor factors. Saves a lot of hassle!
