Best way to remove the quarter light glass from doors?

Post by Gingermonkey67 »

Hi

I am doing a switchover of door fittings from my knackered old rusty door, to a bargain rust free version I grabbed from eBay. £21 !

I was going to leave all of the glass until I realised both door windows old and new had the reg plate security etched into the glass, and my OCD wouldn't let me leave them incorrect!

So I have stripped the mechanism from the new door, only bit I am struggling with is the small non opening quarter light glass and seal. It seems totally locked in with friction by the look of it. I don't want to damage the seal if I can help it, because it's in good nick and I would like to use it again.

Is there a method for getting these windows out?

Cheers all

Hi

I will add that the window guide holding the quarter light in place has been removed too, it's not that holding it in place anymore, just the rubber.

If I remember correctly, there's a bolt holding the front guide channel (the vertical piece the actual door window runs in; it can be pulled away from the quarter glass) on the inner door skin a few inches below and forward, and a screw at the top on the outer door skin (on the top of the door under the rubber seal). That's the only screws holding it I think. Might take some gentle tapping and general persuasion to get it to come away but then it just drops into the door and can be manoeuvred out provided the actual window glass is out, or lying on the door bottom at least. Shouldn't be too big a struggle....

as ^^^^^^says, use a plaggy spreader to ease the rubber from the door and tap the 1/4 further in then try pulling out , you need to be quite rough sometimes

Thanks guys

Thought it might be something like that. I will try the plastic spreader to try to lift a long section of the seal edge. That will probably do it.

Cheers
