Advice on new engine for 1987 TD please!

Post by Maria_2112 »

Hi I'm new to this forum, it was recommended by a friend! We have a 1987 1.6 TD which needs a new engine and I'm after some advice regarding the best way to get one! I have had various suggestions including buying a Mk 2 golf for the engine and upgrading to a 1.9, getting a new one.... but just wondered what people on here have done themselves or would suggest etc.. We've only had the bus since october last year, and this is all new to us so any help/advice gratefully received!!

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the club....

Upgrading to a 1.9TD 'AAZ' (thats the engine code most sort after) is your best bet. This is a very popular upgrade but has to be done right and with all the correct parts, for it to run as it should.
There are several traders on here that should be able to sort you out with the engine and do the conversion for you.

The obvious notes of caution are...that it is done right, that if second hand (which it will be) that any replacement is low mileage (something under 90K) with some history. That the cam belt/tension is changed and any seals/pumps/clutches are changed at the same time.

I'm hopeful someone fitting the bill will be along sometime shortly.

I doubt a 1.9 NA diesel would give you much more power than the the 1.6 TD so you would need to get an AAZ engine, loads on this in the alternative engine forum.

if you buy a golf ect then that will give you the bits you need , however it wont last long!

most common for these to work for a bit the expire leaving you in the same situ , due to already being used and then fitting it into a 2 ton van!

best long term asnswer is to save up and buy a new motor with at least years warrenty.

also if you upgrade to 1.9 you will need to consider a gearbox upgrade to get the most from the new engine , as it wont go any faster , just accelerate a bit quicker

as anyone who has had a conversion done and actually uses the van. lots are converted but only ever do a few hundred miles a year!

Ok, considering we use our bus as our second car, we do use it quite regularly so maybe our best bet is to buy a new one - would a reconditioned one be suitable??

And my next obvious question would be - can anyone recommend a supplier of engines please?!

Many thanks

lots of companies , lots of results.

i think there are good and horror stories from most companies.

a bit of a pot luck deal.

anyone done 12000 miles in a year on a recon engine? i doubt it. but im sure thers one.

before your engine blew , how ofter did you change the oil , and antifreeze? and did you use the correct grades?
