Engine Code GW ? Needing some help.

Post by Wig »

Hi Guys,

Hope everyones doing well. I'm hoping for a break in the weather tomorrow so its time for the full service. :D

I've only had the van a few weeks and been glued to this forum for tips.

I'm struggling to find information on my engine though, CODE - 2401221 GW. 1.9 water cooled.

I understand its the 90 BHP version but was after Spark plug types, oil filter, Best Oil and what HT leads to use. ( Forum Style )

Its currently running Bosch sparks and leads and 10w 40 semi oil. This is how i got the van.

Cheers for the help. :ok

I used to have one of these, I just used what Brickwerks recommended. I also read you should be using the higher octane petrol.

They go very well for a 1.9! Pretty rare too. :ok

I'd be having that removed and replaced with 15w 40 mineral
you have flat face tappets and need all the additives and old school long chain molecules you can get
AGG 2.0L 8V. (Golf GTi MkIII)

Its basically an injected version of the DG (is it injected or is it an engine rebiult in a GW case??), so you can use the DG parts (which are the same essentially as any other WBX, bar slight fittment variations)
Brickwerks for parts... Quality stuff at sensible prices...

GW's dont need anythign more than 95UL, as they were USA market engine and designed to run on the low grade stuff there..

Not for me to dissagree with Bricky (the info prob pulled from somewhere..) But it also says the oil required is 10w30.......... NO not unless you live in Alaska or somewhere with low ambient temps.... Use 10w30 in the uk and it will eat its bearings, leak oil and rattle tappets like a Talbot Horizon....

I'll explain my reasoning...

A 2.1 DJ has a compression ratio of 10.5 to 1 (actually a fraction higher in reality) the GW has the same comp ratio as a DG at 8.6 to 1.. the DJ runs on 97+UL as std, with a timing adjustment on the DJ it happily runs on 95UL... so why an 8.6 CR GW wont happily run on 95UL I have no clue.. and as I prev said.. in the USA the fuels are generally lower than what we have..

As an aside the MV 2.1's that all Vanagons in the US got after 86 all had 9.0 to 1 CR....
