new vw beetle.....gearbox problem

Post by keith »

Hi

Wife beetle 2001 is difficult to get into first and third gear .....second and fourth are fine......

Does this sound like a linkage or select or problem

Any ideas?????

Thanks

More likely the selector mechanism (cables?) need adjusting.

If it's anything like the older stuff the main dealer uses an alignment tool fastened to the gear lever to hold it in a particular position whilst ajustments are made. I'm only guessing though, I have not carried out this particular adjustment myself...although we too own a 2001 New shape Beetle. :ok

thanks Martin

i read something like that late last night....something about locking the g lever ...then locking the shift mechanism...then resetting where the plastic grips link with the cable.

If it's anything like it used to be, VW supplied us with special molded (plastic/nylon) retaining frames that you inserted into the gate (the trim around the gear stick) this would hold the gear lever in a set position ready to adjust the linkage/cables to their neutral position....something like that. Once adjusted correctly the gear lever should select gears with ease. :ok

Well.....it was more straightforward than that.....

Quick look after work revealed that a plastic corragated air pip had come drift and fouled the select or mech....

Retrieved....refitted......and all nice and vee dub again.
