We're planning on July and have Patterdale in mind as our base for the week. We're from Bristol doing some motorway and some not, overnighting enroute. Studying the OS it's obvious that the approach from the south on the A592 will be 'challenging' Will I make it or would I be best staying on the M6, coming off at Penrith and down the A592 on the western shore, which seems to be less arduous if longer.
As a guide we were in the Peak District last year, Snake Pass was fine (overheating due mainly to my stupidity); Winnats Pass was a real nail biter but we got there with a long Q behind us!
I've read the comments re campsites, we're not family orientated so happy with hook up, showers and a good pub.
Your comments on both matters would be most appreciated.

Kirkstone pass isn't bad going to Ullswater as you'll be going down the steepest bit.It's a nice drive and probably better than the long drag over Shap on the M6

^^ wot he said. The Struggle up from Ambleside is exactly what it says, but you'll be going from Windermere and it's a pretty gradual climb.

If your already heading up the M6 then up to Penrith and back down is normally the quickest way but we live in Kendal so normally go through the lakes

Brotherswater inn is an excelent pub but we have not stopped on the quiet site but have friends that can confirm the bar is very good.

The quiet site is very nice, excellent facilities, open fire and good bar but it is expensive

http://www.waterfootpark.co.uk/ is a nice site, has it's own bar and only a five minutes walk into Pooley Bridge with its 3 pubs

That's a good shout especially as the price is all in! I'm finding it increasingly frustrating as more and more sites are charging extra for the kids then extra for the awning

Thanks again for your input. We' had always thought of travelling non motorway for part of the journey, so will head straight for Patterdale on the A road. We're not encumbered with children so still keeping an eye out for a fairly basic campsite.

Quiet site was very nice when we stayed there (only time I've ever seen a red squirrel) until Friday night when half of Liverpool turned up complete with 19 man ex-army tents and the site ceased to be quiet!
they were good fun though, some sort of youth group if Irc

Plenty of wild spots on the lake. It's my favourite lake and I have had at least 30nights without paying and no hassle. Some nice spots to pull up and walk down to the lake. Public toilets are nearby and there is also a pub in walking distance
