1.9 to 2.1??

Post by Cookie77 »

Just had my new van (1.9 83 t25) set up by Leicester carb & ink center and he has told me it has a 2.1 dj engine not a 1.9 dg ??? It's running on 1.9 gear with a webber conversion??? Even the guy a bought it off thought it was a 1.9???

Will this work ok? The place who has set it up says it will be fine?

Went to big bang and was very diss appointed with it very flat and stuttery?

Can I fit a better carb or twin carbs??

At 112bhp the 2.1DJ lump is one of the best standard engines for driver experience. Having said this none are what you would call fast and even a well setup DJ feels adequate at best...all I am saying is don't expect too much.
Swapping to carburettors from injection is common practice when carrying out a 1.9 to 2.1 conversion.
There does sound like you have some running issues and someone like Ian Hulley will give the best advice as he has exactly the same setup as you but with the benefit of an LPG conversion which you might want to consider.

I have the 2.1 on a standard pierburg 2e3 carb + lpg
I can say if you junk the pants weber then you'll unleash the horses
the pierburg is perfectly set up to spark up the 2.1 fires.. the weber was never fitted to the T25 so is no substitute.

more horses can be found by fitting delorto drla 36's

Any reason for the suspicion of it being a 2.1 ......my 1.9 DG is an Elite Recon.......and has a DJ prefix on the engine number........apparently they use the same case, and didnt bother 'changing' the engine number etc.......
I thought exactly the same as you.......at first.

Having said that...it does go like stink........so perhaps they did put the wrong engine in mine, after all......

None taken martin :)

the 2.1 is a long stroke 1.9
sucks longer, squeezes more, bangs bigger, and blows loads.
should be running on 97 ron unleaded (yes the expensive stuff) so that might be your problem if you have the cheap stuff in.
might be worth asking if the timing was set for the 95 ron or 97

Fit a known good Pierburg 2E3 without altering the settings at all, Webers appear to have been pushing their wares through the VW scene and garages in general, they are crap ... a brief search on here will support this claim. If you have a 1.9DG running a Pierburg on gas you don't need to even remove the carb and manifold from the van to swap to 2.1DJ.

My DJ was set at 5 degrees BTDC by Aidan so it can run on 'normal' 95 ron unleaded and I have never touched it since (60,000 miles and 4 years almost to the day later) ... it does occasionally have a few miles worth of petrol through it but runs on lpg for the vast majority of the time, it is smoother, cleaner, quieter (I know I didn't believe it either) and FAR cheaper on gas. The one thing that gas can't do is make up for a badly running petrol engine, it needs a good ignition system to work well and cannot mend or mask other engine issues.

The guy at the garage did say it would not run at the correct timing marks and said it may not have the correct pulley wheel fitted??
