Which DA sander?

Hi guys,

Could anyone advise on whether to get the Sealet DAS150T:

or the DAS151:

They are the same price but not sure of differences really other than the option to connect it to a hoover. Will be using it for prep for roller paint and sanding old units.

Dust gets everywhere and you will soon get fed up forever cleaning up afterward

That was my first thought but there seems to be other differences such as the rpm speed, watts etc and i think the throw of the orbit

Not really sure which to go for or if it would even make any difference?

Just wanted to check on here before buying as it's a fair investment.

Also how many pads would i roughly need for the whole van, given the last numpty slapped a lot of paint on with a brush? I guess a range of grits needed too.

Getting very confused here.

This Clarke looks identical to the DAS151:

but is cheaper however listed as a Random Orbital Sander opposed to a DA Orbital Sander. Searching on-line some people seem to think there different thinks others say there the same??

I think you will find they are they same thing. If I'm correct, the term 'DA' meant 'dual action' in that - air operated tool anyway, there was a little counter-weight on the shaft that's housed by a rubber gasket. If you pushed the gasket back and held the shaft still, you could then turn the counter-weight on its axis so that it then engaged with a machined slot on the main shaft, i.e it locked the pair together so that once switched on, the shaft could only move in a fixed rotation, just like a grinder.

A random orbit is doing just what a DA does in its unlocked mode, only there is no moveable counter weight, so you can't ever lock it.

Well, if it's been handpainted, then it's gonna be fun in getting that lot off, particularly if its still partially uncured under the surface

As I've said before, it's down to how deep your pocket is really. Buy cheap discs but you will probably get through more so could be a false economy, long term. I've used plenty of various makes of d/a discs, but 3m ones are the ones I'd recommend for consistent grit quality, longer life, etc particularly when using dust extraction.I've not seen the paint film on your van, but I'd probably think of say 120 grit for starters going up to 150/80, to 240 before primer. That's my opinion, others might well disagree. If 120 grit discs begin to clog nigh straight away, then the paint film is too soft; try something more aggressive, like 100 or even 80. [my van was refinished - I use the word loosly too- in cellulose with liberal amounts of stone chip, and I had to use 80 grit on some of it, and even 40 grit on one or two places Yes, I could have persevered with 120's but life's too short, so 40 soon sorted the grotty bits out.

I used probably 4 boxes of discs in total, though remember I also refinished my pop tp roof too, and I also did the door shuts, A posts etc so that extra work maybe used half a box more than a standard repaint jobbie.

I could supply you some commercial stripper and contrary to what some folk think , it will not touch the vw factory grey protective coating , well if you leave it on it for a few hours maybe....
also if i remember my youth da stood for desouter automotive, and henceforth all orbiting sanders were know as DA sanders ,bit like all vacuums being called hoovers ..

If you are taking it back to the metal, the most economical way is those wee brass wired brushes on a drill - or mounted to a ginder, you've just got to be a little softer with the grinder....

If its not to late I got a similar sander of ebay last year. Awsome tool and you can get replacement parts to. German quality
