Help needed, Fitting a new heater control cable!

Good morning everyone. I am looking for a bit of advise off you helpful bunch.
I have started to replace my heater control cable with a new one thinking that it will be a quick job :rofl
After removing the relevant bits of dash and spare wheel carrier I am struggling to get the cable connect to the heater valve. Am I best removing the valve and connecting the cable to it or is it possible to fit in situ.
