Axle wind up?

Can you dig it out again Clive cuz Ive done a few very basic observations which blow the 2mm rule out of the water

Just checked the doughnut position, it's at the wrong end; thanks for that max and caddy.

I'll swap that over and see what happens but I'm guessing the tyre difference was highlighting this; although the vibration had been getting progressively worse more like something failing.

Must admit I didn't know the petrol and diesels were on opposite ends, seems an odd one that it would make a difference.

It probably makes a difference because the rotational inertia of the prop is coupled to the transmission side and de-coupled from the front-diff rather than vice-a-versa in the petrol. The petrols are not chucking down the driveline great square edged hunks of torque like the diesels, more like a smoothed sinewave... those flat fours are soooo refined!
