Crack in water expansion tank

Post by ro6er »

Hi,

I thought I'd test run my bus out this morning. And lucky I did before setting off to Cumbria as it has developed a crack in the water expansion tank. Any idea's why this might have happened? Also I noticed the water hasn't been passing through to the other water tank.

A few months back my fan belt went and a pipe burst as I couldn't pull over in time so maybe it was affected at this point? I topped up after fixing the belt and pipe and bled the radiator to get the bubbles out. It was fine for a few months. I did a few thousand miles and now this has happened.

Just thought I'd ask the question incase there's something I've over looked?

Thanks,

Roger

It's a common fault ... the old bottles go hard and yellow and then crack from the filler neck down to the sender, often you only find out when the red blinking light of doom comes on.

GSF bottles are ok as are Brickwerks of course. You don't say what engine you have .....

Thanks, oops yeah sorry it's a 1.9 petrol.

That's sounds like the issue. Picked a new one up from ebay, I think I'll change the cap if it doesn't come with a new one.

Again thanks for your help.

Do NOT get a cap from GSF or Ebay ... it won't work.

Ok if you say so. I was wondering if mine was working at all. It looks fairly new but if you say some don't work. I guess that could attribute to a few things..

Thanks,

I got a new bottle from JK, it lasted 3 months.
The seam at the mid point would leak when the system was presurised.
Bought one from VW. Much better quality.

Crumbs! I'll see how I get on with the new one then. Ordered a new cap from brickwerks.. I can but try, at least I now know to check it.

The Brickwerks cap will be genuine so no problems there, the new tanks can be of varying quality from other suppliers...just keep an eye on it over the next few weeks, chances are it will be fine.
