Steel gas pipe question

I have a new hob with a steel 10mm gas pipe.
I want to connect it to a 10mm copper pipe.

do I use a compression joint, or does the steel pipe need something else?

compression is fine, i would get the steel (stainless) compression joints from http://www.bes.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as the olives aren't as soft and will work better on the steel pipe. You can use brass, but i prefer the stainless fittings for crossing over the materials

one more question.
the copper will have to be bent quite severely 'S' shaped to meet the steel.
What would you do as access is quite restricted?

Do you have to bend it in situ? If you do, and it is really bad access i would be tempted to use two compression elbows (that if you can get two spanners in there) You could bend pipe by hand, but you run the risk of kinking the pipe. Can you undo it further back, remove the pipe, shape it, then put it back? I have a small pipe bender i could post up to you (if i can find it) but you would need to take pipe out to use it

two elbows sounds about right.
I'm going to make a small incision into the side of the hob to get better access, as the side will not be seen unless one peers into the gloomy grill

I didnt think compression joints were allowed on gas, unless on the appliance???

The original hob used compression on the pipe to disconnect before the appliance James... and that's 25 years old

Probably the easiest way to do it. And you can use brass compression as per normal on the copper pipe.

Slightly wrong, you are ONLY allowed to use compression joints in a motorhome on a gas pipe ( big no-no to use soldered joints)

And you can use compression joints anywhere you like in a house on a gas pipe ( just need to be accessible)

I assumed this was for in the house not in a camper! plus i was told by a plumber that all gas in house has to be soldered gonna give him some "pooh" at work !

beat him with his own stilsons! To be honest in a house i'd rather solder, but you are allowed to use compression. In a camper your not allowed to solder

OK nob head here has measured the pipe diameters
we have 6mm copper and 8mm steel

I would imagine the copper would be the bendable type

but joining the two now gets more interesting

are you sure its 6mm? very small size that. Anyways, that limits your options. You'll have to use brass, one here on ebay

No problem in using brass on the steel pipe (i just prefer to use steel), just make sure you use a jointing compound on the olive
