starter motor

Post by Thorssen »

Hi - New to the van, so to save me time looking, could any of you guys let me know where abouts to look on an '83 T25 Petrol for the starter motor as it needs some gentle coercion with a hammer. Or at least I hope it does, as its definitely not playing. Access to the van is a bit tricky where its conked out, so it would be great if you could let me know rough position eg underneath bottom right or something along those lines.

Cheers in advance
C

Hello,

Beware of getting crap in your eyes

Massaging with the 'toffee' hammer is a get you home measure.

You will need a long extension to undo the top 'D' bolt (17 mm), and maybe someone to stop it turning from inside the engine compartment.

Clean all electrical connections, brass bits must shine!! 13 mm nut for cables on solenoid.

If your working facilities are limited, then a recon or n/sh motor is a good bet, you can overhaul them yourself , but the results are often disappointing.

Depending on the starter motor supplier, you may get an 'oilite ring', which supports the end of the starter motor shaft.

This will fit in the gearbox bell housing when you have to change the clutch.

Work safely,

Cordialement,

:ok

Worth checking the small push-on spade connector on starter as the connection can sometimes become poor and without it, starter won't play. Bear in mind its live under there if you don't disconnect battery first. Check connections, particularly earth but generally starters become troublesome and the only solution is a replacement.

If you want to remove it, one nut (15mm) you can get to underneath, the other also serves as an engine to gearbox nut/bolt which is undone in the engine bay at the back on the right hand side - 17mm

If u need to tap tap, access to the solenoid via the o/s rear wheel, its the first thing behind the wheel structure. More than enough space from there..

If you have a Auto gearbox coupled to a 2.0 CU engine, there are no oilite bush on the bellhousing..
