Hi all , i'm about to strip and rebuild my carbs on my Aircooled 2ltr t25 , is there anyone on here willing to come around and setup them up afterwards at my house , I'M WILLING TO PAY !

Personally I'd leave stripping carbs well alone unless I'm actually replacing worn jets etc. If they just need a clean, take them off, give 'em a good dose of carb cleaner and then run redex through them when they're back on.

If you're stripping them to try to improve performance, try this first, the procedure below was hand-written on the inside cover of my Haynes manual. This will let you set up the carbs pretty well without any special equipment.

First, run the engine until it reaches normal working temperature, say 10 to 15 minutes, then switch off. Remove air cleaner for access. Next, check that the balance pipe rubber connecting hoses between the 2 inlet manifolds haven t perished or are taking in air. On each carb below the electro-magnetic cut-off valve is a mixture screw. Turn both in all the way, then back off each 2.1/2 turns. Now restart the engine still with the air cleaners off. Adjust both screws slowly in the SAME direction until the engine runs at about 750 rpm. Next, remove the right-hand magnetic cut-off valve live connecting wire, listening carefully to the drop in revs. Then reconnect. Do the same on the left-hand side, again noting the decrease in revs. If the rev drop is different, this proves the mixture is incorrect on one carb so adjust by small amounts both mixture screws until the speed drop is identical, with each magnetic cut-off valve wire removed in turn. This all requires patience and takes time to get correct but if is important and well worth the effort in the end.
For the final stage and with the engine running, concentrate on the left-hand carb, on the top of which you will find 2 screws. The right-hand one is the actual idle speed control which must be turned until the engine speeds up to around 900 rpm. Next, turn the smaller left-hand screw a little in both directions until the engine runs smoothest. If the carbs and the engine are all in fair condition, this should be as good as human hands and ears can expect without expensive special equipment. I must stress that this is only a very abridged and simplified description for home tuning and will not, of course, provide worn out carbs with a new lease of life. Even so, it is well worth while for, in 9 cases out of 10, the main problems we find with these twin carb engines is mal-adjustment of the carbs. Providing the above method is carefully followed, a fuel consumption of not less than 20 mpg should be obtained.
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

Plus make sure that your throttle cable is working properly, and is oiled.

The spring ball joint on the RHS end of the throttle control bar benefits from a small dab of grease.

As you can see I have a tuning setup, but I stress that your timing must be spot on before you balance the carbs.

Look carefully at the pictures of the carbs, and you will see rubber washers on certain adjusting screws. These are often missing or perished.

Make sure that the electrical terminals are in good order, and that you are getting good electrical continuity, especially at the chokes.

The idle enrich 'little box' on the lhs carb will probably not work,(resistor burnt out or ball bearing jammed), either replace or ignore.

Its worth changing all your vacuum hoses ( 3.8 mm braided) , including on the airfilter (standard and working :?: )

Hi, Im in a similar position to you daz,
Got my first VW a 1980 T25 viking,2.0l Aircooled auto with twin carbs, she's running ok, fuel econ's a bit low and gutless on hills. The carbs also need tuning/balancing, did you have any joy with yours? what was your outcome/result did you find someone to do it?

Sarran1955 thats a great you tube link, who's the Jedi master doing the tuning? Is it you?, if so please dont tell me you still live in France but have moved instead to sunny Surrey so I can pay you a visit to experience the black art on my bus!!

This was 'Tilly' 2 litre Aircooled, in for a complete engine, and everything else, rebuild last year.
