I just hope they've had their shots, God only knows what they could catch from that river.
Has it got the inside bracing plates?

I never liked that carrier 100%, looks lighter and easier to fit, but don't know about it's strenght... I prefer this one (expensive one):

Strong as they come. Mine carried a 16" Merc Penta with mud tyre, tools in the well and a Jerry can and bracket.
I often stood on it while cleaning the roof, using the roofrack. No give in it, no flex on the hinge areas round the mounting points either.
Basic, utilitarian but very functional. I want two.

Totally agree but its a pity it looks as if it fell of a farm gate

Its all part of owning a rear wheel carrier .....

You can also do something similar to this, but then you have to check the rear door shocks... too heavy...

I have the earlier version of that and a bike rack that connects to the spare wheel and hang 3 steel bikes on it. That wheel carrier swings open with the bikes on and I can lift the tail gate as normal. I have got another flip down number on the tail gate to though that fits three jerry cans, another spare wheel, three chairs and a table so I might need the stronger gas struts when thats loaded up

Wow Jed, if you engage 1st, being fully loaded, does the van makes a wheelie?
Ok no more jokes... One of the things I like from Vanagons (US ones) is that their owners made a lot and different custom carriers...
I am 100% sure you have seen this website before!

Something like the above would be great. But will the tailgate open with a wheel and 3 bikes on it? Or do you need to modify the struts?

Struts are balanced against wieght to standard tailgate, so yes.
