You have an Aircooled engine, gearbox mating is going to be the least of your worries, All the engine 'upgrades' including the Golf are watercooled requiring a radiator pipe work etc, not worth it imho from an Aircooled starting point. If you want more ooomph get a rebuilt Aircooled engine with performance enhancements air filter, exhausts cams cranks etc all can be improved over stock. To answer your question adapter plates can be enginered to get engines to bolt up to the standard gearbox bolts, if you have the funds or the skills just about anything could be done.

2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.
