changing a cs to a jx

Post by frenchwesty »

Hi How long and easy would it be to change a CS N/A diesel engine to a JX turbo diesel engine, been offered an engine swap as mate is selling his rusty bus with a jx in it and offered to let me swap my good running cs with his jx before he sells it. I guess they would switch around easily just not sure how long and how much it would take, he is in his jx is running a 4 speed box and with our cs it is a 5 speed box. Would I need to change the boxes over also or could i get away with just doing the engines?? any input appreciated.

Thanks

are both vans post 84?
pre 84 cs will have a few diffrences which althoug can be addressed add some time - electrical connections/ fuel lines / water pipes

if both late then the jx will fit but you will need everything from the van engine wise - exhaust / wires / manifold/pipes/airfilter /fuel lines ect.

your 5 speed box should be lower geared than his 4 speed , although not many td vans had 4 speed boxes so you will need to check what box he has and if it has been converted has the gearlinkage been changed.

4/5 speed means gearbox mounting / gear linkage (complete with stick and rods) need changing , poss driveshafts depending on year although yours is 5 speed so should be late

if you were converting to factory spec then the td had a thicker radiator and an upgraded cooling fan with wiring to cope.
the td also came with a different shape tunnel around the gearstick (you can tell if the donor van is originally a td) and also the extra water pump in the engine bay!
